BALMORAL BAKERY

Right behind the bus stop on Holland road at Holland village - That's where it was in my childhood. Fast forward many decades and I still find myself craving for the Tea Cakes at Balmoral Bakery. And without fail, whenever I'm at the shop, the Beh Deh ( Hainanese for Uncle) will pop out from the kitchen with a tray of freshly baked cakes to top up the fast depleting shelves; and I'm reassured again, that the cakes and pastries will taste exactly as it did, when I was 10.

The Butterfly Cupcakes, Custard Cream Puffs, Napoleons, Custard Tarts, Rumballs and Cream Horns are reminiscent of a time when we would stop whatever we were doing in the afternoon, for 'Tea'. Nobody does that anymore I think, and I don't see why. A 10 minute break to recharge with a cup of tea and a bite to eat does far more for the nerves than a jog to Starbucks for a swig of caffeine. And did I mention their dome shaped Chicken Pies? (Ever notice how nobody makes them dome shaped anymore?) So if you ever want a taste of the past, visit them @balmoralbakery. I'll probably bump into you there.
